RIM NORDIC'S CA STATE SPECIAL

RIM NORDICS CAL STATE SPIAL

Southern California is home to 40+ weekends of racing per year. Even in July, the year can feel long for the Norba racers who race 24-7. This was further made evident by the fact that eight Platinum Performance riders did not make it to the sixth race at Rim Nordic. It is a shame, considering that the Running Springs circuit ranks among the top in Southern California. It was also a great race.

You can consider three falls and getting beat up by the combination of steep singletrack climbs and tightly switchedback singletrack climbs as fun. Rim Nordic is an amazing course and a true mountain bike race course. The loop of 8.3 miles is 70% singletrack and 30% fireroad. There is a lot of singletrack climbing, which can be very steep and grindy. You reach the top just when your legs are tired. This gives you plenty of recovery time on a rolling ridge. It’s time to keep going, because riders will be navigating a technical singletrack that requires a lot of nerves and excellent bike handling skills. This is what I have seen firsthand, as I mentioned earlier.

Sports did two laps, experts did three, while beginners did one lap. It was a more difficult race than the average, with 445.9m of climbing per lap. Many Platinum riders, including Shigy Suzuki and Bud Donatoni, were able to secure their State Series titles with top results. John and Bud were awarded first-place finishes, while Shigy was fourth. This was all Shigy RMZ Suzuki had to do to win the dead. Perhaps most important, it was the pace he used to keep the tires on the ground throughout the race. I wish I had been as fortunate!

Rim Nordic racers who have never raced Rim Nordic before learned a valuable lesson. Rim Nordic is a place that riders love. Rim Nordic’s riding is among the best in the state.

The following Platinum Performance riders did not make MBAs Top 10 List: Bob Nisbet (4th 40-444 Expert); Shigy RMZ Suzuki (4th 45-49 Beginninger); Andy Osburn (6th 40-444 Expert); John Reveles (8th 40-444 Sport); Semipro Jamie Goldstein (40-44 Expert Doug Urbach), who both DNFed.

The SoCal State XC Championship racers will have two months to rest before the final event at Big Bears Snow Summit, September 9. It’s time to rest, then start training for the final event at Big Bears Snow Summit on September 9.
